Birthday Challenge Update

Please put this on your calendar! Saturday, November 3rd, the annual Birthday Challenge will take place on the beautiful Longleaf Trace, a Rails-to-Trails project extending from Prentiss to Hattiesburg. The Birthday Challenge is an individual challenge for folks to traverse, under their own power, the LLT for a distance equal to their age in kilometers (kilometers = 0.625 x miles). So, a fifty year old would be challenged to do 50 kilometers which would be the equivalent of about 32 miles. Ride South has worked with the Birthday Challenge Committee to provide a mass start for bicycle riders wishing to complete their challenge, launching at 9:00 AM, from the northwest end of the trail, Prentiss, Mississippi. Here is an agenda for Saturday, if you wish to participate:

Arrive in Prentiss no later than 8:30 AM in order to park, unload your bike, register and prepare to ride. Prentiss is about a 1 1/2 hour drive from Jackson. Register with the registration desk to assure your Birthday Challenge medal will be available upon completion of your individual challenge. Registration is required to be eligible for door prizes and gift certificates, as well. Ride South will have a drawing at 3:00 PM for $500 in gift certificates, including a $100 gift certificate for the rider traveling from the most distant hometown to participate in the Birthday Challenge Ride. The Ride South shop will be open by appointment on Sunday, November 4th, for redemption of the certificates, if necessary. Please make a donation in the amount of your choice to the hard working folks organizing the support!

The mass start will be at 9:00 AM, after the National Anthem and the invocation. Since this is not a race, we request that the faster riders line up near the rear of the pack to assure a good mix and a bit of fellowship, please. Slower riders please keep to the right to allow faster riders to pass. Safety is paramount! Enjoy yourself, ride as long as you like (no need to limit the miles!) and plan to be back for some birthday cake, plate lunches and the 3:00 PM drawing. Mingle with John Schlitter (Bacchetta) and his brother Randy Schlitter (RANS), talk recumbents and make new friends with hundreds of other cyclists! We may have Jerome Hediger (Hase, Greenspeed) here as well with some trikes to try out.

IN MEMORIAM
DON SULLIVAN
