. . . this rider noticed the pounding of indian drums in the distance.

This Sunday was another one of those near-perfect days in Mississippi. Near-perfect because it wasn't long enough! We left the Ride South shop about 2:25 heading for Pelahatchie Lake, 21 miles away. The cool, dry November air was refreshing as we traversed the bike trails with the usual, cool bike! . . . go recumbents! calls from the old fashioned upright bike riders we passed. Soon we were sailing down Holly Bush, Haynes Chapel, and Lake Road to Ware Hill, enjoying the company and the view.

After an invigorating climb up the first hill, we paused a moment to commune, and reflect on the silence, when this rider noticed the pounding of indian drums in the distance. Upon further reflection, the thump . . . thump . . . thump heard was that invigorated heart muscle slamming against my chest wall! Reflection time over, we . . . almost reluctantly, cruised down a few hills to the beautiful Pelahatchie Lake Resort. A great place for a picnic, but shadows were growing and we had miles to go.

On the return trip, we enjoyed cashing in on the credit established by climbing Ware Hill and easily reached speeds of 45 mph! The consensus was . . . the climb was worth the effort! Cruising west on Holly Bush, we enjoyed a beautiful blue sky consisting of a couple of small, isolated cirrus cloud formations some of which included splotches of rainbow colors. Danny said these were called sun devils . . . no relation to the pro ball team. We were just glad we were burning 2000 calories, not adding calories in front of the tube watching someone else exercise!

Some of the group elected to return across the Causeway where we were greeted with a welcome breath of warm, humid reservoir air and a colorful sunset on the water. The perfect end to a good Mississippi November ride! We are expecting more of the same this coming weekend at the LLT Birthday Challenge Ride. Be sure you have your bike operating properly and are prepared for a GREAT day to be lay'n back on the Longleaf!
