Journal Entry Jan 27, 2005 the only sound was the soft whirr of wheels and machinery Ride Report 1/27/05 72ºF Only a few cyclists were out, as the middle of the week, in the middle of the winter, is not peak riding time for most folks. Consequently, for most of the ride, the only sound was the soft whirr of wheels and machinery, harmonizing with the artificial wind rushing through the helmet, as the miles, and hopefully some pounds, sort of melted away. A few business contacts were made as we spoke with a nice couple from Magee who had come over to ride on the Trace and were resting at the Ride South sponsored rest area, located at mile marker #5.25. We were happy to also visit with the LLT Trail Manager, Herlon Pierce, as he joined us and praised your support of the Trace. The Kennedys pointed out this was the nicest rest area on the trail. We all agreed. We enjoyed the tree labeling project near Hattiesburg which identified trees such as Black Cherry, Sour Gum, Sumac, etc. and the always present Longleaf Pine. As the abundant, low winter sun shone through, the already dense woods seemed doubly populated with an equal number of straight, black, shadowy trunks projected on the now visible, longleaf pine needle covered hillsides. Squirrels scurried about feasting on hidden stashes of nuts, also celebrating the pseudo summer weather, it seemed. The solitude of this ride contrasted vividly with the last time we visited the LLT when bents ruled and were out in number, even in the not so summery weather. The Birthday Challenge in November was great fun and we enjoyed seeing you enjoying the LLT. We wish we had taken time to visit with all of you more, but we do have some video of all of you on display in the shop. We hope you will visit us and see the fun you were having, but more importantly we hope you will hop on your bike and go for a ride. Ride South The Way to Ride View All Journal Entries |
